SANJIESAN LORE / BUYING GUIDE
Choose a single-issue format for a worldbuilding zine
A small worldbuilding publication does not need to promise an endless monthly series. Blurb offers magazine printing with templates and a project workflow. Consider that route for a bounded issue, then ask whether the chosen format fits the material you can finish and the readers who will use it.
Define one complete issue
Choose a narrow subject such as one invented district, its map and two everyday encounters. Give the issue a clear beginning and ending, rather than extracting disconnected pages from a much larger unfinished encyclopedia. Decide which pages need full-colour illustration and which work through text or line art. If you cannot explain why each spread belongs, reduce the scope before comparing print products.
Read the sample at the actual format
Use the supplier’s current format and file guidance to build a small sample. Place the most difficult spread in it: perhaps a dark scene beside a detailed map key. Check the contrast between the two pages, label size and the amount of explanation needed to move between them. A miniature screen preview cannot establish paper quality, so ask what sample or proof route is available for the configuration you are considering.
Separate this issue from a future series
Estimate your own writing, illustration and layout work for this issue before promising another. Compare the live printing and destination shipping total for the quantity you actually need, not a headline starting price. Confirm what happens if a later issue has a different page count or format. No printing was ordered for this guide; the useful buying decision is whether one complete issue is feasible, independently of an imagined subscription business.
