Choose a sketchbook for a map spread and side notes

A beautiful notebook may be awkward for a wide map with notes beside it. LEUCHTTURM1917’s official sketchbook listing offers several formats and describes its paper and binding. Use that listing as one concrete option to compare, then judge the open working space you need rather than the cover colour alone.

Mock up the page before buying

Draw a paper rectangle matching a candidate format and divide it into the map area, a key and room for unresolved questions. Decide whether the map crosses the binding or stays on one page. Try a portrait and a landscape arrangement using the same content. If every useful note ends up squeezed into the edge, choose a different layout or size instead of assuming smaller handwriting will solve the problem.

Ask about your actual drawing media

List the pencil, ink or colouring tools you intend to use and ask what the manufacturer states about them. Paper weight alone does not prove that every ink will resist spreading or show-through. Where possible, inspect a relevant sample or test a small area of a copy you already own. A drawing made with one medium should not be used as evidence for a different medium’s performance.

Check how the drawing leaves the book

Decide whether the sketch will stay private, be photographed for discussion or become the source for a digital redraw. Inspect how the book opens and how much the binding affects that capture. Confirm the exact format and current delivery options on the store page; this guide does not verify stock or place an order. Choose the book that supports the next use of the map, not merely the most impressive empty object.
