Distinguish a ceremonial display object from its working counterpart

An object shaped like an instrument is not necessarily intended for performance. The Met’s instrument essay notes decorative miniatures in its collection. An original world can also contain display versions, presentation pieces or symbolic objects, but the art and prose should make their relationship to a working counterpart clear.

Choose which features carry recognition

Invent a working object with a clear use, then choose two features that make a display version recognisable: a silhouette, an opening or a distinctive handle arrangement. Change scale or material only after deciding that connection. A miniature need not retain every functional part. Keep the design original rather than reproducing a museum object whose cultural context the project has not researched.

Give each object its own handling

Draw one person using the working object and another moving the display piece. Decide whether the display is fixed to a base, carried in a case or meant to stay in one room. If a character tries to use it as the functional version, choose what visibly prevents that. The difference should arise from the established design, not an unexpected failure added only to make the character look foolish.

Let the presentation reveal a relationship

Write why the display version was given, kept or shown. It may commemorate a task, signal membership or express admiration within your invented society. Do not assume every precious-looking object is sacred or that every ordinary-looking object is unimportant. Compare the final caption with the scene so the description does not promise a working function the story deliberately denies. The object’s meaning should follow its particular history and use.
