SANJIESAN LORE / Images inside worlds

Give an in-world portrait a purpose beyond a character sheet

A ceremonial portrait and an artist’s production turnaround do different work. Library of Congress source-analysis guidance asks who created an item and for what audience. Apply those questions to a fictional portrait so choices about pose, objects and omission come from the image’s purpose, while the character’s established identity remains unchanged.

Choose the commission inside the story

Invent an image requested for a public hall, a family room or a small personal keepsake. Decide who requests it and what they want viewers to notice. These choices can affect framing and attire without changing who the subject is. If working with an established IP, use approved identity and appearance references; a fictional commissioner’s preference is not permission to rewrite settled character facts.

Show one deliberate emphasis

Choose one object or gesture the portrait foregrounds. Perhaps a workshop founder holds a familiar tool rather than wearing formal office clothing. Write why that emphasis matters to the intended audience. Avoid filling the picture with every symbolic item associated with the person. A small purposeful selection gives the image a point of view, while a separate neutral reference can carry the production details it omits.

Let another character read the image

Write a viewer noticing the selected feature and drawing a conclusion. Decide which part of that conclusion is supported and which reflects the viewer’s own hopes or resentment. The image does not have to tell the entire truth to be useful in the story. Keep its interpretation distinct from the project’s authoritative character reference so an in-world image adds narrative meaning rather than accidentally creating a second identity.
