Write two tellings of one invented folktale

A tale told in a family kitchen need not use the same words as a performance in a public square. Michael D. C. Drout’s study of oral multiforms discusses variation within recognisable limits. For an original fictional tale, explore that distinction through two short tellings instead of calling every difference an authorial continuity mistake.

Choose a small narrative core

Invent a tale about a traveller returning a borrowed light. Keep three events fixed for the exercise: receiving the light, being tempted to keep it and choosing a return. These are your own working choices, not universal rules of folklore. Decide what listeners must recognise for the two tellings to count as related in this fictional community. Do not borrow a living community’s sacred narrative simply to provide an exotic background.

Change the occasion and the pressure

Write a brief version told to an impatient child and another told before a community borrowing ceremony. Let the second teller emphasise an obligation the first handles lightly, while keeping the core recognisable. Avoid simply adding formal vocabulary to make one version different. The pacing, selected detail and listener response can change because the telling is doing different work at that moment.

Separate variants from changes to the world

Compare the versions and mark which differences belong to performance, which express interpretation and which would actually contradict an established event. Decide intentionally whether the tale describes a real event in the fiction or exists as a community story with an uncertain origin. Keep that author decision separate from what the tellers believe. A variant can reveal people and occasions without silently changing the project’s settled history.
