Ask what feeds an invented cavern before filling it with predators

A cavern full of large predators raises a useful worldbuilding question: what supports them between encounters? An NPS cave-biology page discusses food arriving through water-carried material and animals returning from outside. Use those examples to ask about inputs in an invented cavern, without treating one real cave description as a universal model of underground life.

Choose one route into the habitat

Sketch an underground chamber and one connection to the outside world. Perhaps a stream carries material in, or a small animal feeds outside and returns to rest. Mark where the input arrives and which organisms in your fictional setting use it first. Do not place the biggest predator at every point in the sketch. Smaller processes and species can explain why the chamber supports activity at all.

Place the dramatic creature within the relationship

Now add the creature the story will encounter. Decide what it consumes, where it spends time and whether it leaves the chamber. A creature visiting occasionally is different from one completing its whole life there. Keep the distinction visible in the setting notes and scene design. If a fantastical energy source supports the habitat, establish what it provides and what remains limited rather than using the word magic to end all questions.

Change the input for one scene

Imagine the chosen input is interrupted for a while and ask what visibly changes first. The answer might be movement, reduced activity or a shift in where a character notices traces. Avoid claiming exact population effects without a developed model. This exercise is useful because it creates environmental consequences connected to the cavern’s design, instead of treating underground creatures as objects that appear only when a protagonist enters.
