Decide when an invented gift creates an obligation

A gift can welcome, thank, apologise or request something, and a scene changes when the participants read it differently. UNESCO includes gift practices among social practices whose meanings vary. For an invented community, choose a particular exchange and establish its local expectations through actions instead of a universal statement about every gift.

Choose who gives what and when

Invent a visitor bringing a small repaired object to a host. Decide whether the host requested the repair and whether the exchange happens privately or before others. These details can change the meaning without changing the object. Give the participants a practical reason to be there. A scene built only to explain etiquette often feels less convincing than one in which a real task is waiting.

Give each participant a separate expectation

Write one sentence for what the giver expects next and one for what the receiver believes is required. Perhaps one expects nothing while the other thinks a public return gesture is necessary. Show a question, delay or awkward response that reveals the difference. Do not make one person a complete representative of everyone in their community; familiarity, status and personal preference can all affect a particular exchange.

Let clarification change the next action

Have someone explain the intended meaning in words appropriate to the relationship. Decide whether the explanation resolves the issue or leaves a genuine disagreement about obligation. The result should change what a character does, not merely add a paragraph of invented customs. Keep this practice specific to your original example unless an existing setting has approved equivalent rules; borrowing a real ritual’s surface does not establish its meaning.
