Design an invented instrument around how it makes sound

A beautiful instrument silhouette can become difficult to stage when no one knows what the player touches. A Metropolitan Museum essay discusses instrument classification through how sound is produced. For an original design, start with a modest sound-making premise and a clear gesture, without copying the forms or cultural meanings of the essay’s instruments.

Choose the action before the ornament

Imagine a fictional plucked instrument with a small number of visible strings. Decide where the player holds it, which hand makes the sound and which part supports the other hand. Draw a plain object and the player’s posture together. Do not add extra strings, holes and levers merely to look unfamiliar. Each important visible feature should either serve the chosen action or have an explicitly decorative role.

Draw a rest and a playing state

Show the instrument on a surface and in a person’s hands. Check whether its delicate parts collide with clothing or furniture, and where a carried strap or case would go if the scene needs one. You are coordinating a fictional prop, not claiming an acoustically tested instrument. If the story depends on a particular real sound, further research or consultation should inform that claim instead of the drawing alone.

Let the gesture serve the scene

Choose a brief moment in which the player stops to answer someone, lowers the instrument or cannot continue while carrying another object. Use the action to reveal attention, reluctance or familiarity. Check that later illustrations use the same basic playing arrangement. The instrument becomes part of character behaviour rather than a decorative item added whenever the world needs a musical atmosphere.
