SANJIESAN LORE / Factions

Give a faction a way to admit and lose members

A faction becomes difficult to write when everyone from one place automatically belongs and nobody can leave. Worldbuilding templates can help organise groups and characters, but the useful decision is yours: what makes someone a member, and what can change that relationship during an ordinary working day?

Choose an observable membership condition

Invent a cooperative that maintains neighbourhood lamps. Decide whether membership comes from joining a work rota, being accepted by existing members or another explicit act. A person who uses the lamps is not necessarily a member. Separate residents, workers, supporters and decision-makers where the scene needs that distinction. The point is not to create an elaborate constitution but to know who can speak in a particular meeting.

Write an entry and an exit

Give one newcomer a reason to join and one established member a reason to stop. Show what changes: access to shared tools, a responsibility or a public association. Do not assume leaving removes every friendship or skill. If departure is restricted in your invented setting, explain the restriction and its consequences rather than treating permanent membership as an unexamined feature of everybody born nearby.

Let members disagree about a real task

Write two members deciding which damaged lamp to repair first. Their shared membership does not require identical priorities, speech or temperament. Tie the disagreement to responsibilities and experience rather than announcing that one person is secretly not a true member. Check existing faction definitions before adding such a scene to an established universe; an original practice example does not authorise changing its official alliances or character assignments.
